Barbara Heskins Davis joined The Land Conservancy of New Jersey staff in 1999 and is currently Vice President of Programs. She leads our award-winning municipal services program, Partners for Greener Communities. This program has helped New Jersey towns receive $232 million in federal, state, and county grants for land preservation and preserve 16,000 acres in their communities. Barbara’s responsibilities include the supervision and completion of Open Space and Recreation Plans, Farmland Preservation Plans, Trail and Greenway Plans, and Environmental Resource Inventories for towns and counties. She also oversees our land stewardship program and our involvement with Sustainable New Jersey, a certification program for local municipalities.
Barbara led The Land Conservancy’s Accreditation Team in 2009 when we were first awarded Accreditation by the National Land Trust Accreditation Commission. Achieving this key credential signifies we meet the highest quality standards for protecting open space, upholding the public trust, and ensuring that our conservation efforts are permanent.
As a community leader, Barbara led the team that organized Morris County Green Table, a forum where municipalities and land trusts met to discuss common goals and projects. She served on the Board of Trustees for Morris Tomorrow, a broad-based community organization focused on regional issues and building consensus to improve the quality of life in Morris County. She served on the Randolph Township Open Space Committee from its inception in 1992 through 2006 and was Chairperson of that Committee during that time.
Barbara earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and English from Franklin and Marshall College and a Masters of Environmental Management, specializing in Water and Air Resources, from the Duke University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
Barbara is a frequent speaker at local and state-wide workshops focusing on open space acquisition and planning and has been a featured speaker at the National Land Conservation Conference, the New Jersey League of Municipalities Annual Convention, the New Jersey Association for Floodplain Managers, and the New Jersey Land Conservation Rallies.
Barbara is a licensed planner, certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners.
“I am an avid bicyclist and enjoy riding the beautiful roads and bicycle trails of New Jersey, such as the stunning Columbia Trail where we hold our annual Pedal for Preservation event. I enjoy seeing the preserved farms, parks, and natural areas The Land Conservancy of New Jersey has protected throughout the state.”
Barbara’s favorite acre: Lillis Farm in Washington Township – “Preserved in partnership with the town, state, and another local land trust, this property combines farmland with open space while offering a connection to the Columbia Trail.”
